Spring Lily I

Watercolor 7" x 5" $45

I am always excited by the shapes in lily blossoms. Their petals explode from the center of the flower in a whirlwind of color and form. They remind me also of Leonardo's studies of lilies for his painting of the Anunciation.

March Morning

Watercolor 7"x5"
A fun combination of red, yellow and blue. I liked the contrast between the yellow sunflower and the purple-blue iris flower and also the contrast between the and the background.

This piece is a more developed version of my flower paintings and resulted from a chance encounter with a friend who showed me a mixed bouquet they just got. I was so impressed that I asked to borrow it for a day.

Andromeda

Watercolor 7" x 5" $40
Lots of things are blooming in the garden now and Andromeda is one of my favorites. It even has a beautiful name! I used a combination of tube and transparent watercolors on this piece. I am very pleased with the light and airy effect in the flowers and leaves.

Stanwood "Unclad" Show

Another weekend in Stanwood at the Unclad show. Lots of flowers blooming and buds on the trees. Just a few more days of Winter and it will officially be over.

Snow Drops

Spring flowers in the garden - their creamy white contrasts with the dark fallen leaves of winter. I used a combination of watercolors on this piece including "Peerless Transparent Watercolors" originally used for hand coloring black and white photos. Their beautiful, self blending, colors are great for capturing colors in nature.

Portrait of an Emperor

Ball Point Pen 8"x5" $20
This ball point pen on paper drawing is from a photo of a stone carving from the Tang Dynasty in the Laqkapala Museum in China. I was drawn to it by the intense expression and the contrasts of light and shadow created by the deep and detailed carving.

Stanwood "Unclad" Show

These are just a few of the figure studies that I did while at the show in Stanwoodl, Washington. Lots of people coming through the show this year and an exceptional group of artists. October will be a show in Portland and perhaps ??? San Francisco in 2009. The show is taking up 7 hours a day this weekend and next so it is a bit of a strian but anything for art.

Fairhaven Study

10" x 6" Pen on Paper $40
This is a sketch from life of a doorway in a turn of the century building in our small downtown, Sycamore Square - origiginally known as "The Mason Block".

It was drawn with a blue ball point pen on thick off white rag paper. I've used all kinds of ink pens and really enjoy the "flow" of ball points.

I'm also in the final stages of setting up a show for the next two weekends "Unclad" in Stanwood, WA - just a few miles south of Bellingham.

View from Uffizi Window

4"x 6" Watercolor
Well, I made it back from SC and now into the Northwest rain forests. There are rumors that Tuesday and Wednesday will be perfect sunshine days. It's amazing how much happened in the garden during the week I was gone. I'm working on today's painting and will post it latter today.
This piece is from a sketch I made while in Florence last year.
